Hello guys! How are you doing? The weather here is still not that chilly yet (I dare say that it looks like the early summer days), but finally Autumn is starting to make its presence known with the beautiful orange look on the trees. I believe now it’s time to change our looks too in order to match and (very slowly) transition to winter. I love this season a lot and dressing for it is a really fun part of my everyday life. To do so, I like to have some autumnal key pieces, or autumn essentials as I call them, that give that vibe.
Beige, nude, grey, pink, cream, red, black and even orange are the colors I choose for this season. In most cases, I try to keep the styles and patterns of the key pieces as simple as possible, so I can re-wear them next year, however, I can’t always resist to some of the new trends. So without further ado, I present you the autumn essentials of this season. (Update: As I’m about to post this it started raining for the first time since ages 😛 )
The Autumn Essentials of 2017
The Oversized Sweater
An oversized sweater is a timeless piece which is always in fashion. The only things that change every year according to the current trends are the patterns and colors in which you can find it. However, investing in a good quality sweater (like cashmere) in a neutral color is a smart move in my opinion. It will pay off its money for sure. The one I’m wearing above is handmade and I dare say it’s my favorite. Of course, there are more affordable options too.
The Plaid Skirt
As you probably already know, plaids are a huge trend this season. And I personally love it. A plaid skirt can dress up any outfit and make it look put together and chic. Bonus point if you combine it with over the knee heeled boots. There is a big variety out there of colors, styles, and prices to match every taste.
The White Shirt
The basic white shirt is one of the essential pieces which you can wear all year round if you like. Especially in autumn and winter, it is great under sweaters and cardigans with skirts or jeans. Well, you can almost do anything you like with it, so don’t feel reluctant to make it rain in order to find a good quality one. Just pay the extra bucks, you’ll definitely use it your whole lifetime.
The Leather Skirt
One of my favorites! It is a piece that can be both sexy, chic or casual depending on how you choose to style it. Wear it with a simple bodysuit or lingerie top and you are ready to hit the dancefloor. What about wearing it to the office with a shirt and some pumps? And my favorite? Worn casually with a sweater and some chunky heeled boots. The choices are endless as well as the styles you can choose from.
The Pleated Skirt
This fall, pleated skirts, and especially vintage-inspired, are considered necessary from many fashionistas. They are a huge trend and we are very happy about it. You will feel even happier if you find one into your mother’s/aunt’s/grandmother’s wardrobe as I had the chance to do. However, you can always find some great pieces online that have nothing to be jealous of the real vintage ones. They are not that hard to style, but you need to take a little care on the details if you want to look like you know what you are doing. If you need some inspiration, I have mine styled in two different ways here.
The Biker Jacket
I think there is no need to say a lot about it. Biker jackets are like denim. They will never go out of style. Maybe there will be slight changes to their cuts and colors accordingly to the current trends, but there is no doubt that a black one will be trendy even in ten years from now.
The Red Boots
Red is probably the color of the year. We’ve seen it on everything this season, so why not on boots? While I was scrolling through the Instagram feeds of some of my favorite fashionistas I saw some outfits in which some red boots stole the show and I immediately fell in love. Dare to invest in a pair this season. And if you feel kind of reluctant just go for a more “quiet” color like burgundy. The sure thing is that it will elevate any of your outfits from pretty to trendy in just seconds!
The Pearly Touch
Pearls are no longer worn by our mums and grandmas. Wherever you look this year you will find pearls on everything. Jeans, skirts, tops, sweaters, bags, shoes, hats, earrings and anything else you can imagine has a touch of these beautiful pearly white beads. These pretty and elegant pieces now give another turn to the most badass and tough outfits. Dare to wear them with ripped jeans or vinyl – leather pants and you’ll steal the spotlight for sure. Get it now why I included them in the autumn essentials?
The Sneakers
A nice pair of sneakers is something I find necessary for autumn. Now it’s too cold to wear sandals and too hot for boots (at least in the place where I live) so this is where sneakers come in. It’s the best and most stylish piece to help you transition from sandals to boots. With the right choice of outfits, you can wear them from day to night and look fab.
The Trenchcoat / The Parka
Trenchcoats are one of the wardrobe staples if you aim for a polished look. This year they are also on-trend, so one more reason to have one in your wardrobe. It’s the perfect autumnal coat since there is no need for heavy coats yet. However, if you are not a fan of them there is always the parka solution. Still lightweight and stylish all year long. Plus, it’s easier to style with sweatpants for a more relaxed look.
I hope this post comes in handy when you are planning your autumnal shopping list. As you can see you don’t need a lot to be stylish and trendy. A few key pieces can transform any outfit. So, which of the autumn essentials of 2017 is your favorite? Do you have your own list of necessary items for this season? Feel free to tell me in the comments section below!

Thank you dear Merel! 🙂
Very enjoyable read. I always have a hard time trying to decide what goes together and what doesn’t but this post has opened my eyes to the variety of outfits I can wear.
Plaid is big right now, and I absolutely love it.
The best part about fall is the comfy, yet stylish clothes available.
Being warm is a huge part of my daily routine and having a big loose fitting sweater is exactly what I would be looking for. Thank you for the amazing article.

Thank you! 🙂
I smiled when I first saw the first item on the list because my client was wearing an oversized sweater this morning and looked lovely on her. And my teammate has been rocking the trenchcoat/ parka. I’m becoming a fan of your blog and I will share with my best friend and sister-in-law. The red boots, however, not sure if I can dig that. 😛 Maybe I need to get used to them first. Great article in general!
